Wind chills will be well below zero in this air and any snow that sticks can accumulate with a fluffiness that makes a lot out of a little in terms of moisture. Temperatures will stay in the teens by day and the single-digits by night from Friday through to Christmas morning, easily the coldest weather we’ve had in a while. In addition, falling rain will quickly change to a squally snow that will add to the difficulty of Friday morning’s drive. Though there’s hope that the interstates can dry off in a brief lull in the air before the temperatures drop, most walkways and driveways will be highly vulnerable for a flash freeze. This is a dramatic change that can only be fostered by some pretty gusty winds. Temperatures are expected to be as high as the 40s around midnight, but then drop through the teens by the morning drive Friday. The ‘Polar Vortex’ will be diving into the middle of the country and then spreading eastward rapidly through the Ohio Valley Thursday night. We are expecting rain to predominate though, and it can be a soaker at times with temperatures rising back into the 40s. Thursday morning will already bring arriving rainfall, but with temperatures really close to the freezing-mark it’s still too early to rule out the potential for icing at the outset. Enjoy the quiet skies today and tomorrow, but as the clouds thicken up late Wednesday you should essentially be wrapping up any casual travel and shopping. A partly cloudy evening tonight will send us back into the 20s to start Wednesday, and tomorrow will ironically feature our least winter-like air of the next several days despite it being the day of the actual Solstice that changes the seasons (4:47pm, to be exact). This is technically ‘milder’ than yesterday but hardly mild. Temperatures were in the 20s this morning, with a passing wave of clouds overhead, and will head to the lower 40s in the afternoon.

(WSAZ) - A relatively quiet start to the week continues through Wednesday, the ‘first day of winter’. Temperatures will stay chilly through the weekend, but bounce back rather quickly early next week, putting us in the 50s once again and putting this brush with winter back into the rear-view mirror.HUNTINGTON, W.Va. The ski slopes will love this turnaround from miserable spring conditions on an all-important holiday weekend, as 3″- 6″ of snow is headed their way. All told, it will be mainly a light event, with most folks receiving 1″ or less of snow, but as you head east (and up), 1″- 3″ of snow will instead be common in the mountains of southern West Virginia and the high spots along and east of I-77. Though even some lowland areas can sneak a coating of snow on the grass early on, the best ‘sticking’ of the snow will occur between Friday’s PM commute and Saturday morning’s drive out for the youth sports events.

The colder air drops us all the way to the 30s by Friday morning, with snow showers breaking out in the colder mountains before dawn Friday, followed by the rest of us eventually shedding any mixing with rain, putting us all in the snow category by afternoon.
